MUSCAT – The total number of camels registered as part of the Omani Camels Numbering Programme as at the end of 2022 stood at 55,205 heads. The programme, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, seeks to provide detailed and accurate information on camel numbers, species and geographical distribution.
Eng. Ahmed Ibrahim Al Na’ebi, Director of the Livestock Guidance Department at the Ministry, said that the programme is a process whereby each camel is assigned a number. The programme helps determine the identity of camels and camel breeders/owners, thereby facilitating and improving the management of camel healthcare and camel products like meat and milk.
The programme, which kicked off in 2017, provides accurate information for developing camel breeding. It helps verify the actual numbers of camels in Oman, estimated to be about 290,230, according to the Ministry’s statistics for the year 2022.
