“The essence of a woman’s success rests in her patience and durability, which helps to overcome any obstacles,” says Maryam Mohammed Al Murr Al Wahaibi, administrative personnel, Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company.“As women we are all strong, mentally and physically. God blessed us with the gift to give birth and also multitask and manage a whole household and still succeed in our careers. Women have amazing durability and immense patience,” she reiterated.
Excerpts:
Women across the world in companies often get into what is termed ‘gender double bind’ – when they become aggressive in their work, they are ‘insensitive’, when they exercise empathy, they are ‘indecisive’. Does it bother you?
It does upset me that despite being in 2021, we, women, still have to face this type of treatment. Women, during the past decade, especially in this country, have proven that they can succeed in any field. And it is all thanks to our dear departed leader, the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who supported women’s rights and made sure Omani women are involved in every aspect of the growth of this country and also allowed them to attain high positions, with the full belief that they not only deserve it, but will also prove themselves. And the legacy continues with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, who is continuing in the same vein, providing full support for Omani women.
The global pandemic was a sphere in which women leaders showed their mettle. What is this essence of a woman that helps them dismantle the usual narrative and help them veer their companies from disaster to success and beyond?
As women we are all strong, mentally and physically. God blessed us with the gift to give birth and also multitask and manage a whole household and still succeed in our careers. I would say the essence of a woman’s success rests in her patience and durability, which helps to overcome any obstacles.
Many qualities of women come to the fore in a crisis – how do they (or you) transpose this into the work ecosystem?
As mentioned earlier, women have amazing durability and immense patience. I also believe that sometimes, the doubts posed by people upon her abilities often push her to succeed — at least to prove a point.
While you may argue that women are at present ruling the world, when will the time come when they will, without a doubt, rule the world?
That time will come when equality is included in human rights. As for women in Oman, they are really blessed because our country is moving forward in that direction.
What are the fundamental characteristics that help a woman shine in the corporate world?
I will look at three essentials: focus, patience and ambition.
