MUSCAT – A former student of Oman Dental College (ODC), currently working as a dentist at a dental clinic in Al Dakhliyah region, was awarded the ‘best postgraduate student of year, 2023’ by one of the top medical colleges in Germany, recently.
Best postgraduate student
Dr Lakshmi Harish, 29, a resident of Oman, completed her MSc in restorative and aesthetic dentistry from the International Medical College, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany with honours and was awarded the ‘best postgraduate student of the year, 2023’ in the academic category.
Exemplary research work
The certificate states that, “Dr Harish’s specialist knowledge and work in her master thesis towards the successful completion of MSc in restorative and aesthetic dentistry has been declared exemplary in terms of highest academic excellence and research leading to honours”.
Beyond university’s expectations
In a recommendation letter issued by her thesis examiner for her PhD application, it is mentioned that her research work was acclaimed as far beyond the university’s expectations.
Dr Lakshmi graduated in October last, but her certificates had to be translated from German to English and also attested by the relevant ministries in Germany. She received them only last month.
Great education in Oman
Dr Lakshmi believes that the education she received in Oman prepared her well to face the highest academic challenges. While her schools – Indian School Muladha, Indian School Al Ghubrah and Indian School Sohar — equipped her with a native-like English-language proficiency and competence in all the subjects; her under graduation programme not only made her a good dentist, but also introduced her to the world of medical research and presentation skills.
Ambassador of Oman
While she was studying at the ODC, she served as the ‘Ambassador of Oman’ in the Gulf Dental Students’ Association (GDSA) for two years and organised oral health awareness campaigns in Oman with her team. She took part and presented in multiple conferences held in Oman, Dubai and Germany during her undergraduate studies.
Various opportunities
After graduating, she started working as a full-time dentist at the Duroob Al Shifa Dental Clinic in Al Dakhliyah region. Meanwhile, she continued to take part in professional development courses, conferences and international exams. She now has a diploma in primary care dentistry (Dip PCD RCSI) and membership of the faculty of dentistry (MFD RCSI) from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI). This opened up opportunities for her to join master courses in Germany and the UK.
Gratitude to her teachers in Oman
During her free time she likes to do yoga. She believes that there could be nothing more serene than practicing out in the welcoming nature of Oman. She feels that studying and working in Oman has helped her greatly in becoming who she wants to be. The supportive nature and positive attitude from the people in Oman helped her grow. The exposure to many cultures here equipped her with the skills to deal with people and fit into various cultures easily. The real-life situation-based education provided in Oman helped her fit in the high standards of education and examination in Ireland and Germany, and Lakshmi noted that she would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to her teachers in Oman.
Dr Lakshmi, who is now planning to do her PhD, hails from Kozhikode, India.
