MUSCAT — Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, in the Medical City, has launched a specialized training programme on transferring patients, using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technology.
The step enhances the readiness of the intensive care system and consolidates its capacities to deal with highly complex critical cases at the level of the Sultanate of Oman.
The programme provides integrated services to initiate extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support and transfer patients whose conditions require this advanced type of medical care. It secures patients’ clinical stability throughout the stages through the services of specialized medical teams and advanced technical equipment. It ensures constant treatment in accordance with the highest standards of safety. It focuses on minimizing the risks associated with transporting critically ill patients. It provides survival chances and enhances the quality of care provided in the sensitive stages of treatment.
The programme is based on collective efforts undertaken by multidisciplinary teams comprising intensive care physicians, cardiothoracic surgeons and anesthesiologists, in addition to qualified nursing and technical personnel. Its operations adhere to internationally recognized standards in the field of ECMO technology. ECMO-based patient transfer programmes constitute highly specialized services available only in a limited number of advanced reference centres in the region.
