SALALAH — The Environment Authority will implement a large-scale environmental campaign to plant 4 million seeds of local trees in Dhofar Governorate’s mountains.

The campaign, which will take place from July 20 to 30, constitutes part of the Environment Authority’s ongoing efforts to combat desertification, enhance biodiversity and restore natural ecosystems. To be conducted in cooperation with Dhofar Municipality, the campaign will see the participation of members of the local community from the wilayats of Mirbat, Taqah, Salalah, Rakhyout and Dhalkout.

Hatim Salim Al Mahri, Director of the Vegetation Development Department at the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, said that the campaign is being implemented for the fifth year in a row. He pointed out that Dhofar Khareef (monsoon) season provides optimal conditions for germination and quick growth of plants due to heavy rains and dense fog. Al Mahri pointed out that soil moisture during the Khareef helps seedlings form strong roots that enable them to withstand periods of drought later. He also underlined the significance of such plants in stabilizing the soil, diminishing erosion, maintaining soil fertility and supporting the sustainability of the vegetation cover.
