The progress of Omani women over the years has been remarkable. And it stands as one of the country’s great success stories, KHAWLA AL AMRI, Ooredoo Oman’s chief people officer, said, in remarks made to Purple online.
“From education to employment, we’ve seen women excel across all sectors, particularly in areas once dominated by men, such as oil fields, government, and business leadership,” she remarked.
Synergy between Omani men and women
“What makes Oman particularly special is the growing synergy between men and women, working side by side to contribute to the nation’s progress. This collaboration is key to building a stronger, more prosperous future for the country, as it harnesses the unique strengths and perspectives of both genders, Khawla noted.
“Today, Omani women are breaking down barriers and inspiring future generations, and their success is a source of national pride. The advancements made are just the beginning, with even greater opportunities on the horizon for them to further lead and make a lasting impact,” she said.

EXCERPTS:
Women’s Day generally brings forth many thoughts: women’s equality/gender parity; women’s rights and the foremost need to break the bias (against women). Here, in Oman, could we say that it is more than just celebrating womanhood; here it is celebrating the success (various types of success, not just the monetary kind) of Omani women and also the unique integration between the two genders, who are working together to achieve a better future for Oman? Your thoughts on this.
In Oman, Women’s Day goes beyond the traditional themes of equality and recognition of women’s rights. It’s an opportunity to truly celebrate the multifaceted success of Omani women across different sectors and roles — be it in leadership, education, or community development. These successes aren’t measured solely in monetary terms but are seen in the social, cultural, and personal contributions women make every day. What makes Oman particularly special is the growing synergy between men and women, working side by side to contribute to the nation’s progress. This collaboration is key to building a stronger, more prosperous future for the country, as it harnesses the unique strengths and perspectives of both genders.
The integration of talents, regardless of gender, is a testament to the vision of our late leader, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, who emphasised the essential role of both men and women in advancing Oman. It’s not just about celebrating the achievements of women; it’s about recognising how both men and women together are shaping a better, more inclusive tomorrow for all.  Indeed, he said: “Our country, undoubtedly, needs both men and women in its blessed march forward, just like a bird that relies on its two wings to soar high in the sky. What would become of the bird if one of its wings is broken and powerless? Would it be able to fly?”

How would you view the growth and advancement of Omani women in the last many years?
The progress of Omani women over the years has been remarkable, and it stands as one of the country’s great success stories. From education to employment, we’ve seen women excel across all sectors, particularly in areas once dominated by men, such as oil fields, government, and business leadership. Omani women are leading in innovation, entrepreneurship, and are making important contributions to the economy and society as a whole. Their growing representation in decision-making roles, including ministerial positions and senior executive roles, reflects not only their individual capabilities but also the country’s broader commitment to gender equality. Today, Omani women are breaking down barriers and inspiring future generations, and their success is a source of national pride. The advancements made are just the beginning, with even greater opportunities on the horizon for them to further lead and make a lasting impact.

Also, with regards to the advancement, would you say that today the Omani woman is on par with any other woman of the world? If not, what more should be done?
Omani women have certainly made incredible strides and are increasingly on par with their global counterparts in many respects. In education, workforce participation, and leadership roles, we’re seeing them excel in ways that were unimaginable just a few decades ago. However, there is always room for growth. To continue advancing, we need to challenge certain social norms and further encourage women to take part in politics and decision-making processes. Promoting gender-sensitive policies and ensuring women’s voices are represented in all aspects of governance and development will be key to ensuring that Omani women not only match but lead in the global arena. With the right support, I am confident we will continue to unlock the full potential of women across the country.
