MUSCAT — The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center confirmed that a weather system is expected to persist affecting the Sultanate of Oman, with chances of heavy thunderstorms starting after midnight tonight and continuing through Friday. These rains will be accompanied by hail and strong downdraft winds.
The Center stated that the initial impacts are forecast to affect the governorates of Musandam, Al Buraimi, North Al Batinah, A’Dhahirah, and A’Dakhiliyah, before gradually extending to include the governorates of Muscat, South Al Batinah, North A’Sharqiyah, South A’Sharqiyah, and Al Wusta. The Center warned of rainfall of varying intensity, which may occasionally be extremely heavy and associated with hail, causing flashfloods (wadis)—some of which could be sweeping. This will be accompanied by strong downdraft winds with speeds ranging from 20 to 50 knots. The impacts will also include chances of isolated rain with occasional thundershowers affecting parts of Dhofar governorate.
The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) advises all to take precautions during thundershowers, not to cross wadis (flashfloods), avoid low-lying areas, and not to sail during the alert period.
