MUSCAT — Burjeel Hospital announced the launch of scalp cooling therapy in its Oncology Department — the first time this therapy has been made available in Oman. The service was inaugurated by Dr Muhanna Al Musalhi, Director General of Private Health Institutions, Ministry of Health, Sultanate of Oman.
Scalp Cooling Therapy helps reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss by lowering scalp temperature during treatment, improving the quality of life and psychological well-being of patients undergoing systemic cancer treatment. The service will be delivered by the hospital’s oncology team, led by Dr Ashok Sebastian Komaranchath, consultant in Medical Oncology, and Dr Ramez Albakouni, specialist in Haematology and Oncology, supported by Burjeel’s multidisciplinary cancer care experts.
“We are proud to introduce this important supportive care option to patients in Oman,” said Shamnad Abdul Kader, Hospital Director, Burjeel Hospital. “Our goal is to provide compassionate, state-of-the-art oncology services that preserve dignity and improve the treatment experience for patients and their families.”
Dr Muhanna Al Musalhi commented at the inauguration, “The availability of scalp cooling at Burjeel Hospital represents a meaningful advancement in comprehensive cancer care within the private sector in Oman. It reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding access to innovative therapies.”
Dr Ashok Sebastian Komaranchath and Dr Ramez Albakouni noted that scalp cooling is appropriate for many, but not all, chemotherapy regimens or patients. Each patient will receive an individualised assessment to determine suitability and expected outcomes, alongside full counselling on the benefits and limitations of the therapy. With this technology now available in the Sultanate of Oman for the first time, eligible cancer patients may experience a reduction in hair loss of up to 40–60 percent.
Burjeel Hospital, Muscat is committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered healthcare services. The launch of scalp cooling therapy underscores the hospital’s dedication to expanding access to innovative oncology supportive care in Oman.
