WASHINGTON — Apple and Google have embarked on a non-exclusive, multi-year partnership that will involve Apple using AI Gemini models on Apple devices.
The next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year, which Bloomberg reported that Apple was planning to pay about $1 billion a year to utilise.
After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.
Apple announced Siri’s new capabilities will include better understanding of a user’s personal context, on-screen awareness, complex multi-step tasks, and offer accurate answers. This strategic move solidifies Gemini as a cornerstone of Apple’s AI strategy, marking a shift toward external collaboration despite prior ties with OpenAI.
