MUSCAT – Young representatives of Oman’s popular karate academy, Bodhi Life Skills Academy (BLSA), will partake in two major back-to-back international karate tournaments, which will be happening at the end of July and early August.
Karate Kumar to lead
Renshi G Kumar, a sixth Dan black belt, and head of BLSA, will lead six members to the third Okinawa Karate World Tournament and Festival, in Okinawa, Japan. The competition will run from July 29 to August 6. The students participating in this event are Pranav V. Nair, Gopeshkrithik Parthasarathy, Gunit Chaturvedi, Taha Faris, Maryam Faris and Rudra Vishal, in Okinawa, the historic birthplace of karate, this massive event draws elite competitors from more than 80 countries. Kumar will not only head-coach but will directly step onto the tatami mats to personally compete in some of the events.
Before this event, Karate Kumar, as he is fondly known, will lead five other students that he coaches to the Isshiryu World Karate Tournament in Chennai, India, which will be held from July 25 to 26. The participants to this event are: Raghav Krishtapparaj, Yusuf Salahudfin, Abu Bakar Siddiq, Pranav Krishtapparaj and Prarthana Menon. This serves as the first international stop for the Oman contingent and will feature intense global competition across multiple divisions, Kumar said.
Valuable exposure
“The upcoming tournaments are expected to provide our athletes valuable international exposure and opportunities to showcase Oman’s growing presence in global karate competitions,” he added in remarks made to the press. Three students of BLSA won prizes in the 2022 edition of the tournament in Okinawa, marking a significant achievement for Oman.
The academy has been operating in Oman for 20 years and has built a reputation for developing karate talent.
As part of the preparations this year, the students recently demonstrated their kata techniques before Kiyoshi Serizawa, the Japanese ambassador, who conveyed his best wishes for their participation in the tournament.
