MUSCAT — The National Bank of Oman (NBO) has announced the completion of construction works at the restored old souq in Suroor Village, Wilayat Sumail, marking an important step in bringing a historic community landmark back to life.
The revival of the souq forms part of NBO’s support for community initiatives that aim to preserve local heritage while creating renewed opportunities for activity and engagement within the village. The project includes the development of six retail units, with the souq already beginning to welcome visitors as the first shop has opened its doors.
Commenting on the initiative, Sherifa Ibrahim Al Maskari, Head of Brand at NBO said, “Historically, the souq served as a central gathering place for residents, a space where trade, conversation, and daily life naturally came together. Through this restoration, the site is gradually reclaiming its role within the community as a place that brings people together. Supporting initiatives such as this reflects our commitment to community development, supporting local economic activity, and contributing to national objectives. We look forward to seeing the remaining shops open and the souq fully operating in the near future.”
To mark the occasion during the holy month of Ramadhan, NBO also organised a community Tahlola event in Suroor Village, bringing together families, children, and residents in a festive and welcoming atmosphere. The evening began with the traditional Tahlola walk by children and continued with a range of family-friendly activities including children’s competitions, a colouring corner, and live food stations. Children also received giveaways, including gifts for children who have memorised the Holy Quran.
By supporting the restoration of the old souq and hosting community gatherings such as the Tahlola event, NBO continues to contribute to initiatives that strengthen community ties and celebrate the traditions that bring people together during Ramadhan.
