
MUSCAT — Dr Chona Thomas, a renowned plastic surgeon in Oman, passed away at his residence, due to age-related illness, in Muscat, recently. He was 84.
A pioneering figure in the development of plastic and reconstructive surgery, he was regarded as the father of plastic surgery in the Sultanate and served as the former head of plastic surgery services in Oman.
Born in Kerala, Dr Thomas landed in Oman in the early ‘70s and began his career at the American Mission Hospital in Muttrah. In 1974, he was appointed to lead the surgical unit at Khoula Hospital and in 1981, he founded Oman’s first plastic surgery unit, which soon rose from a modest facility to one of the best in the Middle East.

In a distinguished career spanning over 50 years, Dr Thomas’ work covered reconstructive, aesthetic and corrective procedures. He was granted Omani citizenship and honoured with the Order of Oman, the Sultanate’s highest civilian award, by the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
