MUSCAT – A large number of Indian diaspora in the Sultanate of Oman along with top dignitaries from India and Oman, welcomed the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Kaundinya on its maiden voyage from Porbandar to Muscat. The ship, named after the legendary Indian mariner Kaundinya, which showcases India’s indigenous maritime knowledge, craftsmanship, and sustainable practices, was received by the Indian Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, at the Sultan Qaboos port, in Muttrah, Muscat.

At the welcome ceremony organised in the port, was participated by His Excellency Azzan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary, Tourism, Ministry of Heritage and Tourism of Oman and senior dignitaries from Indian Navy, Royal Navy of Oman, Royal Oman Police Coast Guard and other Ministries, were present at the welcome ceremony.

The voyage of this traditionally built stitched sail vessel stands as a powerful symbol of the deep-rooted maritime, cultural and civilisational ties spanning over 5,000 years between India and Oman. It also highlights the fact that oceans are connective corridors rather than barriers, enabling sustained interaction between the two nations. The expedition assumes special significance as the two nations celebrate 70 years of establishment of diplomatic relations.

The project was executed by the Indian Navy with the support of naval architects, archaeologists, traditional shipbuilding designers, and master shipwrights. INSV Kaundinya is inspired by a 5th-century CE vessel depicted in the Ajanta Cave paintings and has been constructed using ancient Indian shipbuilding techniques, including stitched-plank construction without the use of modern nails or metal fastenings.

From the commencement of construction in September 2023 to its induction into the Indian Navy in May 2025, the initiative successfully revived a nearly extinct shipbuilding tradition.

Looking ahead, India and Oman are expanding maritime cooperation anchored in enhanced connectivity, secure sea-lines of communication, and emerging opportunities in the blue economy.
