Driven by a need to excel themselves and attain greater personal growth, Omani women have become more empowered than ever before, feels AISHA AL HAJRI.
Encouraging results
In an interview with Purple online, Aisha, who is the Sultanate’s first Omani chocolatier and co-founder of Salma’s Chocolates, says that this encouraging result is thanks to the Omani women’s drive to better themselves by their education and the confidence they have gained to overcome challenges. “I would say this is a result of the combined efforts of our government’s vision, the community’s evolving mindset, and the women themselves who continue to strive for excellence and personal growth,” Aisha, who is also a banker, noted.
Incredible progress
She said that Omani women have made “incredible progress and are now on equal footing with women across the world in many respects”. “Whether it’s in education, entrepreneurship, or leadership roles, Omani women have shown they can excel globally,” she said.

EXCERPTS:
Omani Women’s Day generally brings forth many thoughts: women’s equality/gender parity; women’s rights; and the need to break bias. Could we say that it is more than just celebrating womanhood in Oman; it is celebrating the success of Omani women and their unique integration with men for a better future for Oman? Your thoughts on this.
I believe Omani Women’s Day goes beyond simply honouring womanhood; it’s a day to recognise the accomplishments of Omani women in various fields, not just financially but also in areas like education, leadership, and community service. One of the unique aspects here in Oman is the collaboration between women and men, working together to shape a better future for our country. This integration is part of what makes Oman special—there is a collective drive for progress, and women are a critical part of that journey.

How would you view the growth and advancement of Omani women in the last many years? What would you like to say about that?
The advancement of Omani women over the years has been remarkable. Today, women are leading in different sectors—whether in business, education, or public service—and are playing a key role in the nation’s development. Omani women are more empowered than ever before, driven by their education and confidence to overcome challenges. I would say this is a result of the combined efforts of our government’s vision, the community’s evolving mindset, and the women themselves who continue to strive for excellence and personal growth.

With regards to the advancement, would you say that today Omani women are on par with other women of the world? If not, what more should be done?
Omani women have made incredible progress and are now on equal footing with women across the world in many respects. Whether it’s in education, entrepreneurship, or leadership roles, Omani women have shown they can excel globally. However, there’s always room for improvement, especially in areas where women’s representation can be strengthened. Continued focus on education, mentorship, and opportunities for women will help us not only maintain but exceed global standards in the years to come.
As an entrepreneur, I have the opportunity to connect with women from around the world, and I find myself standing on equal ground with them. This fills me with pride, not only for who I am and how far I have come but also for the vision I hold for the future of women in business in Oman.
