MUSCAT – In cooperation with Oman Association for the Health of the Elderly, the Ministry of Health today organised an awareness seminar at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque on the occasion of the “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day”, which falls on June 15, every year.
The event aimed at raising the awareness of society members and health workers about methods of prevention of abuse of the elderly. It looked into proposed solutions to address the phenomenon and affirmed the rights of the elderly. The seminar saw the participation of 70 doctors and nurses, health workers from governorates of the Sultanate of Oman and representatives of the Ministry of Social Development and civil society organisations, in addition to private sector establishments operating in the field of care for the elderly.
It included lectures on outlining the goals of the “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day”, types of elder abuse, related prevention measures, medical neglect of the elderly, legal protection of the elderly, social rights of the elderly and real-life stories about some of the elderly.
A number of recommendations were made at the conclusion of the seminar. The participants laid emphasis on the importance of developing national strategies that focus on the welfare of the elderly, specific laws that protect the rights of the elderly and specialised training programmes and courses to raise the competence of health workers and caregivers who attend the elderly.
