MUSCAT – For the second year in a row, specialists from the Environment Authority have been joining hands with experts from the NOAA (the US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and an Omani seas future team in implementing a project to study the success rate of Al Rimani turtle nests in the Wilayat of Masirah, Governorate of South A’Sharqiyah.
The project aims to determine the number of young Al Rimani turtles and the extent to which their nests provide a suitable habitat, identify the difficulties that the turtles face and forge practical solutions for the challenges.
The project also includes ways of enhancing the capabilities of ecosystem supervisors in Masirah Island, Al Halaniyat Islands, Daymaniyat Islands and the Ras Al Hadd reserve.
The project, a five-year a wildlife conservation venture that started in 2022, is the outcome of a memorandum of understanding signed by the government of the Sultanate of Oman and the government of the United States.
As part of the project, field surveys are conducted annually between the months of May and October, the period during which the turtle nests are enumerated, the eggs are examined and safety measures are cross-checked.
